Elul - Observances
  • The Shofar is sounded every weekday morning, except on the last day of Elul - Erev Rosh Hashana.

  • Psalm 27 is added to the daily morning and afternoon prayers until Hoshaana Rabba. (Psalm 27 is provided for you here on line).

  • From the second day of Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur we are to say three chapters of Tehillim every day.
Then, on Yom Kippur, thirty six (chapters): Nine before Kol Nidrei, nine before sleeping, nine after Musaf, and nine after Ne'ila."

  • It is customary to give additional Tzedaka (charity) each weekday.

  • Beginning Saturday night before Rosh Hashana, and on the following weekday mornings into Erev Rosh Hashana, Selichot (special penitential prayers) are recited.

  • Elul is an appropriate time to reflect on our actions and attitudes of the previous year, and resolve to correct our shortcomings. See the Essays for more on this.
